Agenda UoA iGEM General Meeting July 20, 2009

Start 17h00

Chair: David Minutes: Emera

• VIDEO – comments – unrecorded section. Summary: Scenes need to be reshot to aNoise needs to be further normalized.

• Science Updates: o Kelly/Justin/Erin See accompanying slides. New #1 purpose of the project is the build-it-on-a-bead. Goal to put 15 parts on a bead. Tested 5, 10 and 15 parts. Prep takes a full day, but it’s being worked on. 5-mer test: Final product seen on gel. Problem: lots of 1/2/3/4-mers when gel was run. Optimization to follow. 10-mer and 15-mer test: after 6-mer bands, everything runs together. More info on Saturday (see symposium section below). o Kalon Plasmid team is working on producing the very large number of PCR products that need to be inserted into plasmids. o Max/Mitch Goal: take out the tryp operons, build it on a bead, reinsert it into a cell and use it as a selectable marker to use as proof of concept. It should be about a 10 brick part. o Amber/Julia Chugging along. Team leaders are gone.

• Informatics Updates: o David – bioinformatics Looking at genes nobody knows whether they are essential or not. o James is playing doctor to our turbo-ill server One little thing and it will be okay. o Enoch – website and wiki Pics were resized. Sponsorship o Dan – video • Business Updates – Emera NINT – Heels are dragging. Hopefully we’ll finally have an appt this week. Emera has started her mass corperate campaign. The business team stalked the UoC team and noticed they have been spouting strange PR bits all summer. We should start doing that, but properly. • UoL – to help them or not to help them? They want us to build their biobattery plasmid. Why? It’s one good thing in our favour. What’s the bad? They will only do it reciprocally, but there is nothing they can do for us that doesn’t make us look weak or shady. David will make sure that whatever is proposed, iGEM okays it as a gold medal standard. • Symposium o Set date and time – Saturday, from 10 – 3. Room booking to follow as well as exact details for the symposium. • Membership Review: Daniel Cotfas o Discussion occurred and the final votes were Abstained (9), Yes(9), No(1). For this reason Dan has now become a volunteer rather than a part-timer. End ___h___
