Meeting minutes June 1st

Ethics: Got info on ethics regarding our own project…really stuff we already had, not much new learned. Studied a presentation by a Belgian team that did well in ethics – but concluded that none of the case studies actually covered the ethics of their project specifically…too general? The emphasis for our project was the conflicts of patenting. Note that different countries tend to focus on different ethical issues.

AIF: Received milestones (due June15th) for what we need to do to get the other 10,000 – just revamping the business plan –for the business team to do. We should have full 20,000 by beginning of July….and we probably won’t get any money until then.

New Member: Should he be able to join our team? Yes – 9 Opposed – 3 Discussion: He’s already missed out on lots of contributing. And we may not have enough plane tickets for everyone now. He wouldn’t be paid, but would expect a ticket. Background info: In molecular genetics, 3rd year, very keener. Re-vote yes – 4 no – 9 Final decision: Will not join.

Website and wiki: Its currently down. Should be up by Friday. We need Dean (who works for biochem) to come verify we are virus free before we can be connected to the internet. All the info is still there, except the database of where wetlab tubes are, which is missing some bits. I seems pretty random, not another iGEM team trying to compromise up.

Subteam updates: PCR team: 10 genes ready. LOTS more primers should be in by Wed or Thurs.

Plasmid: still struggling with pmm1. Will sequence to see whats going on.

Reboot: started designing reboot model so can test soon. Recmobineering – testing main principles, but no big jobs

Beads: still waiting on the beads, hopefully in this week. Helped make more primers. Nicking enzymes are in, but are looking for the right plasmid to test them on. Tried annealing cassettes and digesting, but didn’t work. Heat inactivating the enzyme melts the whole thing…wouldn’t be a problem with an actual gene, as that would be longer.

Library: concern if its salvageable from the wiki

Bioinformatics: 3 96 well plates of primers coming - ~300!!! All of the genes that do not have pst1 or xpa have been send out. About 150 left…

Business team: looking at milestones from AIF. To start contacting departments at the university. Need people in those departments to go talk to them. If your interested in helping, let David know. Also working on a proposal package. Hopefully it will be ready by the end of the week.

Group leaders meeting regarding volunteers: Expect volunteers to give 3hours per week minimum, starting Monday. Lab will be open Mon-Thurs 8-8 and Sat and Sun 10-5. There will be someone there to give you something to do. Mon: Kalon 12-8 (someone else 8-12) Amber (12-3), Ahn (8-3), Oscar 9-4, Alina (8-4) Tues: Kelly 12-8 (someone else 8-12) Amber (12-3), Ahn (8-3), Oscar 9-4, Alina (8-4), Jen (9-4) Wed: Erin 12-8 (someone else 8-12) Amber (12-3), Youness (3:30-6:30), Ahn (8-3), Oscar 9-4, Jen (9-4) Thurs: Mitch 12-8 (someone else 8-12) Amber (12-3), Ahn (8-3), Jen (9-4), Youness (3-7). Sat: Julia 10-5, Jon (10-2) Uchee (10-2), Zach (sometime), Kiwi (anytime), Eric (anytime), phone Ahn if need help Sun: Max 10-5, Steve (105) Kiwi (anytime), Eric (anytime), phone Ahn if need help

If you said anytime, send an e-mail saying exactly what times you will be there, to whoever is in charge that day.

No teams, just come in and we’ll have stuff to do. At the front of the lab there will be a sign in sheet (date, your signature, full timer initial, title what you did). Signing in also ensure we know who did what, and thus we know who to ask questions to.

Need concrete list of lab experience and contact info – David will collect. Will get contact info from wiki page. Add fulltime/part time

Upcoming workshops? Wiki one and fundraising ones are coming up sometime…
