People in Japan feel repulsion toward GM food, because of their vague understanding of genetic engineering.
Todai-Tokyo conducted a survey of whether they have know about genetic engineering.
As you can see, less than 20% people answers that they have the knowledge of genetic engineering.
We did another survey; we asked both people who do and don't know, "Are you reluctant to eat GM food?". The answers are the following:

Todai-Tokyo opened a Japanese website that explains the basics of synthetic biology and the
answers to the most frequent asked questions about genetic engineering, in
an easy-to-understand format. (In addition, we also demonstrate how GM food contribute human society through our "bread making with GM yeast" project.( 貧困対策、やるならかける。） Through such activities we successfully enlightened the general public for synthetic biology.
