Parthiv Amin Nickname: francium phosphide (Fr3P) / fatal attrACTION Program: B.Sc. BioChemical Engineering 2011 QGEM Position: Student Volunteer/Webmaster About: I have just completed my second year in BioChemical Engineering at Queen's University. I garnered an interest in iGEM due to my fascination of the field of biofuels, especially the use of engineered algal strains for biodiesel production. As a volunteer member of the QGEM, I'll be focussing mostly on the technological aspects of iGEM: maintaining the Wiki, performing statistical analyses, system modelling, animations and potentially aiding in bioreactor design if necessary. Outside of QGEM I'll be working on the Queen's BAJA SAE car, as well as getting some of the paperwork filed for a new chemical engineering design team a few of my friends and I are developing. In my free time I'll be playing my guitar, surfing the net, and wracking my brains at Trivia Night with my friends on Thursdays. |

Michael Freeman Nickname: The Naked Sasquatch / Microbicurious Program: B.Sc. BioChemical Engineering 2010 QGEM Position: Student Employee About: Raised by lemmings in the dense forests of Northern Saskatchewan, Michael Freeman showed great promise as a child. Due to an unfortunate genetic defect, Michael was born almost completely hairless and grew to an enormous height, earning him the nickname “Naked Sasquatch” in his early years at the prestigious Lemmington Academy. Upon graduating with a degree in Nut Economics, Michael decided to travel the world before settling down in his career. He said goodbye to his 83 illegitimate children and set off, just a little lemming in a big world. After several bear attacks, various nut-related jobs, and a few run-ins with the rodent mafia, Michael met QGEM cofounder James “Bond” MacLeod during his brief stint as an exotic dancer in Mexico. Intrigued by the field of synthetic biology, Michael decided to enrol in Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University, the only university which would tolerate his obsession with nuts and habit of burrowing under the floors of lecture halls. For some time, Michael worked on the QGEM project and was paid in walnuts. But due to his mutated appearance, the Queen’s Lemming Research Facility was convinced that Michael provided the first solid evidence of a genetic link between lemmings and humans. Desperate to obtain more funding, the QGEM team agreed to capture Michael using a complicated series of pulleys, dominoes, banana peels, and James dressed as an attractive female lemming. However, Michael managed to escape his teammates and was last seen running through the maze-like hallways of Botterell Hall. He is presumed dead. - Excerpts from "Michael Freeman: A Nutty Biography", written by Kate Turner |

Kate Turner Nickname: Chicken Joe / The Octagon Program: B.Sc. BioChemical Engineering 2010 QGEM Position: Student Employee About: I was born in a small fishing village north of Hosjik, around 40km from Reinhavrit. I spent my youth by the wharf, destined for a future of fishmongery a relative despondency. One day, father put his hand on my shoulder and urged me to escape this mariner's black hole and pursue a life of grandeur, a life of luxury, a life which would make Bill Gates cry and Angelina Jolie blush...the life...of a microbiologist. With a heavy heart and a spinning head I left on a whimsical journey to the shining doors of basically the only university worth considering (excepting Reinhavrit Polytechenhaus Engineerenkopf Univerijstatin); the magically inventive, radically spirited and infallibly beautiful Queen's University. The study of natural sciences thrilled me, but my attention was drawn to the kilt-clad, Gentian Violet-dyed, mohawk-toting, GPA(Golden Party Armor)-wearing side of the university; the Engineers. With motives of fashion alone I transferred quickly to the field of Chemical Engineering, making my father weep in his grave (rest his soul). After years of indulging in a degenerative lifestyle (like many enrolled in the applied sciences), Mr. Harry "Bubbles" Zhou, like a glowing angel, summoned those who wanted a life of grandeur, luxury, and making Bill Gates cry to follow him. The very next day a pipetter was thrown into my hand, a centrifuge onto my desk and a thinking cap onto my head. I am on the Queen's iGEM team where my innovations will resonate through the scientific community and rattle the foundations of popular thought. I'm going to make your brain explode. The life of Kate Turner, as paraphrased by Michael Freeman |
