The Campus Fair is held annually at the University of Calgary. It is a great opportunity for students of all ages to learn and discover the potential subjects and areas that may become of interest to them in the future. Our team participated this past weekend (June 6th, 2009) in the event alongside many other groups. Eleven of the U of C iGEM team members helped out as we promoted synthetic biology to kids aged 3-15 and parents in order to foster some interest in the field of synthetic biology. To provide a basic level of understanding of synthetic biology, we held a pipetting competition and had an arts and crafts table set up throughout the day to make artistic bacteria. We demonstrated how bacteria can be manipulated to perform specific functions and we were able to simulate certain lab techniques in a fun and safe environment. Our team was also able to interact with younger children and their parents, allowing us to promote iGEM and our team. Read more!
