The problem

Ground-water contaminated with arsenic affects an estimated 137 million people worldwide. Existing treatment methods are expensive and/or difficult to implement in a rural setting. This year we're exploring the possibility of using a bioremediation approach to tackle this issue. Microbial organisms have evolved several mechanisms to survive in the presence of heavy metals. We wanted to find out whether we can adapt these mechanisms to together create an arsenic sponge.
