The goal of our project is to clone one or more genes from the cinnamaldehyde pathway into E. coli as a potential insecticide against mosquito larvae. The ultimate goal of this project would be assemble this pathway in E. coli in order to produce large quantities of cinnamaldehyde that could be sold as a commercial product. Alternatively, we would like to overexpress one or more of these genes in the aquatic plant duckweed. Duckweed grows readily in stagnant water, overwinters at the bottom of ponds and lakes, and becomes part of the detritus mosquito larvae feed upon during the spring and summer months.
