Design

E. coli propels itself from place to place by rotating the flagella. To move forward, the flagella rotate counterclockwise, and forms the motion called swimming. But when flagella rotation changes to clockwise, the bacterium tumbles in place and seems incapable of going anywhere.

In our bacteria-motor, we aim at applying the swimming of a large number of E.coli to promote the motor. To control the speed of the swimming and make it adjustable in a certain range, we made use of the inducible expressing of an important fragment called "cheZ" in E.coli, by changing the concentration of the corresponding inducer "IPTG".
