During the build-up of government armed forces in northern Mali following the retreat of rebels in October 2007, government troops reportedly demined areas previously occupied by rebels. It was not reported whether the mines were recently laid. In 2002, Landmine Monitor reported that the Malian army was experienced in mine clearance.

For the first time Landmine Monitor identified landmine casualties in Mali. In 2007, at least 11 people were killed and an unknown number of others were injured in three incidents reportedly caused by mines placed by Touareg rebels. In August 2007, a bus from Algeria drove over a mine near Ti-n-Zaouatene in Mali; 10 civilians were killed and several more were injured. In September, two mine incidents involving military occurred, both near Ti-n-Zaouatene; in the first incident, three soldiers were injured, but for the second incident the army did not specify the number of people injured.
