Hello my name is Ryan Liang, and I am a recent graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School. I am 18-years old and I am interested in the field of science. Although I am still young, I am willing to take any opportunities that will benefit me educationally. This summer I am involved in an internship at UCSF in the cell and molecular pharmacology department where I am working with post docs and grad students whom are teaching me proper lab practices to work with mammalian cells. For me, being able to work here opened a new outlook on careers involving synthetic biology and the expectations of working with adults. When I am not working here at UCSF, I have a part-time job that I do on the weekends. I work in a shop that sells attire for children attending private schools. I am happy that I am able to do both jobs without conflict. To prevent myself from becoming a workaholic, I socialize with friends on the weekends or after work. I am attending City College of San Francisco this fall where I hope to transfer to UCLA. When I need an opportunity to just relax, something I do often is watch movies with my friends or family or even both. My parents would bring me to the movies very often at a young age and that’s when I aspired to become a movie director. I kept that dream until my third year in high school when I took a course in biotechnology on a whim and found it more fascinating than any other subject. That course was like no other, this class provided me with knowledge that can affect me in real life like disease, treatment, traits, and inheritance. My senior year, I took an advanced course in this subject because I found it interesting that I've never learned about anything that was directed toward me and my body. I’ve never considered working with anything related to the human anatomy and its complexity; but now, science is what I choose to pursue, or more specifically, biotechnology and the new world of synthetic biology.
