概要:这个合成生物学的项目旨在通过改变一种人类肠道中的细菌,Escherichia coli,来达到监测和修复泄漏管道的目的。被改变的E. coli将会通过吸收在泄漏处释放的一种化学信号来检测泄漏。当细菌向泄漏处迁移时,它们将会合成两种蛋白质,一种在细胞外部,一种在细胞内部。这两种蛋白质构成了生物蛋白胶的两个组成成分。只有当两种成分混合在一起的时候粘性才会被激活。E. coli 将被改变使得其在泄漏处破裂,从而混合两种胶成分,制造出一种具有粘性的蛋白质堵塞物来修复管道。
